Romance Novel Review: One Day in December by Josie Silver

You tread lightly through life, but you leave deep footprints that are hard for other people to fill.

one day in december by josie silver

Two people. Ten chances. One unforgettable love story.

Laurie is pretty sure love at first sight doesn’t exist anywhere but the movies. But then, through a misted-up bus window one snowy December day, she sees a man who she knows instantly is the one. Their eyes meet, there’s a moment of pure magic…and then her bus drives away.

Certain they’re fated to find each other again, Laurie spends a year scanning every bus stop and cafe in London for him. But she doesn’t find him, not when it matters anyway. Instead they “reunite” at a Christmas party, when her best friend Sarah giddily introduces her new boyfriend to Laurie. It’s Jack, the man from the bus. It would be.

What follows for Laurie, Sarah and Jack is ten years of friendship, heartbreak, missed opportunities, roads not taken, and destinies reconsidered. One Day in December is a joyous, heartwarming and immensely moving love story to escape into and a reminder that fate takes inexplicable turns along the route to happiness.

The Review:

Firstly, Laurie. I liked her. she was a great heroine. She was funny realistic, emotional and kind. Jack, I wasn’t too keen on. He wasn’t the typical Hero in that he was the alpha male that  I am used to reading about. He seemed a bit weak.

What I did adore was that the story was very British and I could relate to everything! Josie Silver has an amazing way of pulling the reader in and describing the surrounding so incredibly well. It is like you are sitting right there on the bus or the sofa with Laurie or the fun fair with Jack!

Well, If I am honest I didn’t like the book as much as I thought. It had echoes of One Day by David Nicholls.  and although I loved the setting and the Laurie, I couldn’t stand Jack, he wasn’t likable enough for me, plus I wasn’t keen on the friend Sarah.

A Solid 4/5 Kisses.

“Her vaginal ratchet moved in concertina-like-waves, slowly chugging my organ”…Bad sex awards 2018

It’s that time again.

The Bad Sex award 2018 nominees have been announced, by the Literary Review This year they are all male and honesty some of these have the worst metaphors I have ever heard!!

The above quote was from Scoundrels: the Hunt for Hanscalpp by Major Victor Cornwall and Major Arthur St John Trevelyan.

My Ejaculation was violent and repeated. again and again, semen poured from me, overflowing her vagina, turning the sheets sticky… Yuzu slept deeply through it all without making a sound, her breathing even.

Killing commendatore by haruki murakami

Don’t know why but the word semen isn’t very sexy at ALL. not to mention, she’s asleep?? seriously, not too sure why that isn’t a rape scene, but its one of the nominees…

In his mind he pictured her neck, her long neck, her swan’s neck, her Alice in wonderland neck coiling like a serpent, like a serpent, coiling down on him. she had found a way through his clothing and her fingers lightley touched his cock.

The paper lovers by gerald woodward

His pubic hair is red. His erect penis is a surprise although I had imagined what they would feel like, read about them, seen them represented on toilet walls and magazines. I didn’t see it before he entered me, but afterwards, it is small and sticky and amusing. I want to touch it but I don’t dare. I don’t know the etiquette.

Grace’s day by william wall

Ah, well… I’m a little shocked really. its quite blunt and a little disturbing description of sex.

They stay in this position for a long time, Anna sucking and slurping with the same lazy persistence you’d use on a gobstopper or a stick of rock

Kismet by Luke Tredget

Cum inside me. Cum inside me. cum inside me. Blinding breathless shaking overwhelming exploding white God I cum inside her my cock throbbing we’re both moaning eyes hearts souls bodies one.

Katerina by james fey

To be honest this seems like a lot of words just added together with next to no grammar. not only this, but I feel that it uses most of the correct words I would expect from an erotic sex scene but , it seems disjointed and out of context. not the worst, yet not terribly great either.

And the winner is…

I Failed. Big time. I managed to get the first three chapters of my book done. This month has been particularly difficult. I am currently working in a very stressful environment. I don’t wish to go into much detail, but I found myself having to take a break from a lot of things, just to get through. needless to say, my novel went to the back of my mind, and I focused on self-care, which was just as important.

Review: Taking Her Turn by Alexa Riley

ARC received in exchange for an honest review

Mina and her Husband Kingsley have the perfect marriage… except that Kingsley  is afraid he will hurt her if he releases his full alpha on his wife. Mina decides to take a little control, to unleash the beast within.

She’s the most important thing to me on this earth and I have to protect her. Even from Myself

Perfect for fans of over possessive alpha males, Alexa Riley short Novels are great to satisfy my dirty mind. This is the second(?) time that AR have written about an already married and happy couple.

I’m done trying to pretend I’m not an animal for you. I’m done forcing myself to be calm when all I want to do is mount you on the nearest surface and rut.

AR novels have this bluntness about the heroes that I love. There’s not Bullshit about them. Me Tarzan you Jane. So hot!

I love a sassy heroine, and Mina is a virginal wife with a dirty mouth.. gets her in trouble.. yum!

5/5 stars.

When Evie Nicholson is asked to visit Kettlesheer Castle in Scotland to archive the family heirlooms, she jumps at the chance. Evie’s passion for antiques means that, for her, the castle is a treasure trove of mysteries just waiting to be uncovered.

But in each heirloom lies a story, and in the course of her investigations, Evie stumbles upon some long-buried family secrets. Add handsome, gloomy heir Robert McAndrew and a traditional candlelit gala to the mix, and Evie’s heart is sent reeling with an enthusiasm that may just extend beyond the Kettlesheer silver…

Review:

The Vintage Girl By Hester Browne was a bit of a whim purchase for me. I usually love Erotic Romance, but to be honest the ‘Vintage’ part of the title pulled me in. I love all things vintage, and I loved the look of the cover.

I decided to use my Audible credit to purchase this book and was not disappointed. I loved Cathleen McCarron’s voice. She was perfect for the novel.

Evie Nicholson works in an antique store and is a bit obsessed with all things in the past. She is invited to Kettlesheer, a struggling family mansion to value some of their stuff, and they are skint!

Evie meets Robert McAndrew, son and heir to the mansion, and sort of maybe falls for him.

To be honest, it was a good story, and I loved the detail of the house, the antiques, and the dancing., but I do think for me, she fell short of the romance. Other than some odd moon eyes and one kiss, there was none. That’s not to say this wasn’t a great book, but for me when it comes to romance, I love the works. Dates, mates, sex, attraction, lust.. it just didn’t have this.

I have never read anything by Hester Browne before, and even though the Romance part wasn’t really Romancy, I think I will read more especially The Runaway Princess this sounds like a great book I wanna read.

Onwards and upwards..

NaNoWriMo: Romance Novel Announcement

Hello Darlings!!!

It’s that time again where Writers join the thousands of other writers to complete 50,000 words in a month. NANoWriMo  is a great way to finish/start that novel you have been dreaming of writing.

If you have a novel of your own you are starting, let me know in the comments below. I’m looking for buddies, and I would love to see what other’s are writing this year…

Below is the Synopsis and an exert from the novel I am currently writing.

It’s an Erotic Suspense novel Called Criminal Love.

Criminal Love Book Cover (1).png

Synopsis

Gracie

I shouldn’t want the big man, with the homicidal smile. He was clearly dangerous or he wouldn’t be in prison, but everytime his eyes raked down my body from across the room I could help but shudder.. in pleasure. Besides he’s inside, not like much could happen.

That is until he’s released.

Luke

Gracie was the one thing I looked forward to the entire year I was inside. Her body turned me on so much. Pity I have to kill her brother, but first, I need a little leverage before I get my revenge.

I wonder if Gracie has a Kidnapping fantasy?

Excerpt

“Alright, Love. Fancy meeting you here?”

Oh.My.God

What is HE doing here?

“Did I scare you?” The slow grin forming on his face was wolf-like. Fear crept up my body, I was already out of breath from the treadmill.

I looked towards the exit of the private room, then back at him, in time to see the smile fall, and a scowl form in its place.

“We need to have a little chat” his rough voice sneered at me.

“We do?” I licked my lips nervously, his gazed zeroed in on my mouth. “what about?”

“Your brother” he looked away from me and around at the room. “He’s been a bit of a problem”

I gasped. This giant of a man terrified me. He looked bored, and his voice held a threat. He stopped looking around the room and brought his eyes to mine. He was so intense, he just stared.

I cleared my throat. “W-what has he done?” He spun on his heel, giving me his back, and started to inspect the machinery. I looked to the exit again, and taking my chance, ran towards it.

I got no more than a few steps when a massive arm, seized my waist, and lifted me off my feet, and planting me face first into his broad chest.

“Don’t fucking touch her!”  The suit wearing, prisoner from Broadmore, roared. The arm holding me let go and I slipped and fell on my butt.

“Forever was something we all took for granted, but the problem with forever was that it really didn’t exist.”

After 4 years of homeschool, Mallory Dodge is attending her first year of high school. Tired of not being normal and trying to hide from the past, she discovers that the past is sitting in the seat next to her.

“We’ve been separated. But we had never really been apart.”

I have read JLA before with her Wicked and Torn books and I loved her writing style. She completely immerses the reader into the story from beginning to end. told in the first person, Mallory Dodge is a character I could relate to, that I think everyone could relate to. That is part of JLA magic. Her characters feel real.

I am familiar with New Adult books, and I was at first worried. I don’t always expect a HEA. they can go each way, and sometimes I just need a feel-good book. Not one with a really tragic ending, but I hoped JLA hadn’t let me down.

I didn’t want another literary Broken Heart.

“Hoping never really got us anywhere, did it?”

Mallory Dodge was a flawed character, but she was so kind and thoughtful character that I loved her instantly. She was an outsider to everyone in the world except Rider, and for the last four years, she hadn’t known him.

Rider Stark was a character who put Everyone before him. He took risks with his life because he felt he didn’t deserve to have a great life.

“The past never went away and it was not designed to do so.
It would always be there, and it should be acknowledged.”

The past between the two of them was heart-wrenching, and as the pair begin to sort through their emotions and trauma, you get flashbacks. They are all set from Mallory’s point of view and it is often the unseen that makes the most impact.

Creative Writing

What is Creative Writing?

Copy of 18. First LoveHumans have been telling stories for hundreds of thousands of years. Cave paintings show that people have always had the desire to entertain and inform each other through different mediums.

There was an advert a few years back for Sky TV that particularly moved me. Dustin Hoffman was standing on a rooftop, above a vibrant but misty city. He said;

Stories; we all spend our lives telling them, about this, about that, about people. But some, some stories are so good we wish they’d never end. They’re so gripping that we’ll go without sleep just to see a little bit more. Some stories bring us laughter and sometimes they bring us tears but isn’t that what a great story does? Makes you feel? Stories that are so powerful, they really are with us forever.”

I often reflect on this when I struggle or doubt myself. I have a story inside of me, and I want to move people enough that they have to lose sleep because they wanna hear the next part of my story.

What is Creative Writing?

It is often said that creative writing is the art of creating a story using characters, plot, and dialogue. It is that, but more broadly its a story told that is made up.

It doesn’t have to be a novel or short story. It can be a poem, a play, screenplay or even a song.

There are a lot of different elements to creative writing. Such as which narrator to use, character identity, conflict, dialogue, rhyme, rhythm, theme, and plot. I often get overwhelmed by the terminology, which causes stage fright. That perhaps if I don’t know all this stuff, then maybe I shouldn’t be writing at all, and I wonder if anyone else has those doubting thoughts.

National Novel Writing Month starts November 1st, and over the next few weeks, I’ll be posting some things that I find helpful when starting NaNoWriMo, and researching some of the barmy terms for things you probably already do.

This year is going to be awesome.

Series: Gloriana St Clair, #1

Genre: Paranormal Romance

♡ Add to Goodreads ♡

What – did you think all vamps were pale, thin and brooding? Don’t I wish.

Gloriana St. Clair is an eternally “full-figured” vampire-she just happened to be bloating when a sexy Scotsman sank his teeth into her. She and said Scot- Angus Jeremiah Campbell III, aka Jeremy Blade-have been on and off again for centuries, currently off. A couple hundred years has taught them how to press each other’s buttons-in good ways and bad.

Glory’s headed for Austin and a new business venture: Vintage Vamp’s Emporium. After all, she loves clothes, and she is an antique. Only problem is, there’s a billionaire techno-freak vampire hunter on the loose. Blade’s in total he- vampire mode, and wants Glory to move in with him so he can “protect” her. But it’s time for this vamp to explore her own powers.

Whilst there are a lot of plus size heroines in novels now, back when this was published in 2007 this was rare. REALLY rare.

Additional to that Glory is a really flawed Heroine. She has a gambling problem, a shopping problem, and men problem (s).

I loved this about her. I am a plus sized girl (and proud!) And it was so refreshing to read about a Vampire whose a big girl.

Reasons to chose a Pseudonym and why I have one…

Pseudonym

Noun

a fictitious name used by an author to conceal his or her identity; pen name

Are you thinking about becoming an Author?? I am. It’s one of the most difficult things I want to do, but I am going to make it as fun as possible… Writing is about creating an entire world from your imagination, and for me that starts with a Pseudonym.

I have one.. and I’m going to tell you some reasons why I think you should get one too.

img_20181124_084755_978

Above: Alexa Riley is the Penname of 2 authors!!

Reasons to use one..

  1. Multi-Genre If you plan to write more than one Genre. Maybe, you want to write ‘Chick Lit’ but may also want to write something historical. If either one comes first, that name will be ‘known’ and will be synonymous with that genre. Depending on the audience, this may be frowned upon.
  2. Privacy You may have a full-time job, be a pillar of the community or simply don’t want people to find out you write for whatever reasons, like family squabbles for one.
  3. Uniqueness Let’s face it, if your real name is Jane Austen or John Grisham or Anne Rice, your books may be confused with other authors work. This can cause angry readers, who leave angry reviews.
  4. Brand some authors name themselves to be remembered within the genre. E Knight writes Historicals, etc
  5. You may sell more books, unfortunately, the publishing world is still very gender biased. Crime novels are usually brought because they are written by men, and arguably Romance novels are preferred to be written by women. There are of course exceptions, but these are rare.

Why I am using a Pseudonym

I’ve always thought I would write Multi-genres, and even though my name is pretty unique, I, at some point would love to write erotica.

So there are definitely some benefits to having a pen name when you write.

Will you take a Pen name.. let me know in the comments.

Hygge: The Ultimate lifestyle for Bookworms

Hygge: A Danish and Norweigan word for a feeling of cosiness and good wellbeing.

About two years ago, this word was everywhere in the UK. People were Hygging (?) left right and centre. The Little book of Hygge by Meik Wiking was in every major supermarket.

If I’m honest, I wasn’t that into it, thinking ‘God this is like avocados- it’s just a phase’ I may have been wrong about both. I won’t be buying any avocados soon ~(yuk) but Hygge, may have stolen my heart.

I’m sure you can tell from this blog I am a bookworm, (I prefer Book Unicorn, actually. I am NOT a worm) so I going tell you why I think Hygge is perfect for all Book Nerds…

  1. Books go really well with drinking, tea/coffee/Hot Chocolate/mulled wine.
  2. Hygge is about slowing down, making time to read
  3. Candles– Who doesn’t love lighting their favourite Book scented candle
  4. Creation of a cosy atmosphere- Blankets, cushions, comfy chairs etc.
  5. Build relationships – Book Clubs, online and offline communities.
  6. Leaving the Drama in the Books…

  8. Finding your Tribe- Most Bookworms are Introverts, they are not overly fond of big crowds. Find 1 or 4 people to chill with, reading listening to music is perfect.
  9. Comfort food– Okay this is a personal one. I love to munch on popcorn, or gummy bears or cake when I am reading

I am here to be your hyggespreder. I am starting a new section of my Blog all about Hygge, including some recipes, seasonal tips, Cosy Room ideas, relationship building, and tips on how to make time for all of this..

Summer doesn’t really feel like the time to be cozy, but IT is about relaxing and enjoying the moment… In a few days I’ll publish a post about Hygge in summer, and why it is almost as important to get cozy in the summer as well as the cozier of seasons..

Vampires. Werewolves. Beasts that hunt in the night. When New Orleans Detective Jane Hart investigates her first official homicide case, she never expects to have her world ripped apart. But the murder she’s investigating is part of a deadly war between vampires and werewolves and now Jane is caught in that eternal battle. A battle that can’t end well.

One look, one taste, and Aidan knows that Jane is far more than she seems. Far more than she even knows herself to be. She’s important in the paranormal war, not a pawn to be used, but a queen to be won. And if he can’t keep her at his side, if he can’t stop the darkness from descending on the town then Jane Hart will become not just a fierce cop, not some guardian, but something deadlier. Darker. Aidan will fight heaven and hell to change her fate. To change their fate because he is more than just a predator.

And Jane is more than prey. Far more.

Format: Audiobook

Narrated by Sophie Eastlake. I liked her performance, she had a calming voice, and in doing so made the thriller parts seem scarier.

Review

I have read several of Cynthia Eden’s books and they are amazing. She is so imaginative and this is a fabulous example of why I love this author.

A brutal murder leads Jane to a victim whose blood was drained and throat ripped out. Then the body disappears, and Jane is introduced to Aiden, the Alpha of the pack, and the one who needs to stop Jane from interfering in the Otherworld..

“Are you sniffing me?”
He stopped.
“Because that is some weird serial killer shit if you’re doing that. Don’t make me go for my gun again.”

Jane was incredibly likable; a tough as nails cop who was Kick-Ass. She reminded me a bit of Jane Tennison from Prime Suspect.

Aiden.. oh Aiden. Just yum! He was demanding and strong, Possessive and protective.

“What was that about? Why did you kiss me?”
Propping his shoulders against the door, he leaned back and let his gaze sweep over her. “I want to fuck you.”
She stopped pacing.
“I thought the kiss made that pretty clear.” He lifted a brow. “Was I too vague? Should I try again?”
“You’re not supposed to say things like that.” Her voice had gone hoarse.
She obviously had him confused with a human. Her mistake. “What am I supposed to say? That you’re beautiful? That you charm me? That I look at you and ache?” His laughter was rough. “Those lines are for mortals, not for me. That isn’t the way I work.”
After drawing a quick breath, she took a step toward him. “How do you work?”
“I’m a very primitive kind of guy.” That was the flat truth. “When I see something I want, I take it.”
“I’m not something. I’m someone.”
“And I’m not the flowers and candy type. I am the type who’ll give you so much pleasure you’ll scream until you’re hoarse.”
She stared at him. “Got it. You’re the way too overconfident type.”

Sam Parker is a Svente Vampire. The weakest out of the three breeds of Vampires. Trapped with her sire, Victor, Sam has resigned herself to his cruelty, until one night she is invited to partake in a test for a place in the Grand Master’s Army.

Once there she meets with Jared, The Grand Master’s Heir, and the sexist man she has ever met.

The Pagori, the super strong breed, and the Keja the beautiful breed, often look down on svente due their weaker, and less beautiful nature, however, Sam’s gift is usually strong, which earns her a place as a co-commander of the army as well as the only woman svente vampire.

Problem is that there is a war coming and the army needs Sam, so does Jared, they just don’t know how much.

I started this book, via audible, Saturday night before bed. What started as a quick 30 minute listen to relax before bed, became three hours of ‘This is great!!!’

I adore it when you begin a book, and you just know you are going to buy and love every book that this author writes!!

Format

AudioBook: The book was narrated by two people.

The part of Sam was narrated by Justine Eyre, Whilst the male part was played by P J Ochlan. Whilst Justine did brilliant, unfortunately, PJ butchered the cockney accent. Dick Van Dyke would be proud.

“Men! If he was a woman he’d be considered a bit of a slut, but apparently because he was a male it was completely normal and acceptable.”

I had read Suzanne Wrights, Phoenix Pack series previously, so I knew to expect a good novel, but this book was amazing.

Characters

Sam was Fabulous. She was kick ass, strong, and sassy-as-fuck. She was brutally honest and completely knew her own strength. She swore like a trooper, and I loved her for it!

How could you be attracted to someone who made you so pissed off that you’d considered burning their balls with a lighter?”

I rolled my eyes at Jared quite a few times, especially when he said something sexist. At times he was a pig, and he was always wrong about Sam, but he had a heart of gold. He was fiercely protective of Antonio (the Grand Master) and his twin brother.

Romantic Conflict

“Whether she realized it yet or not, this betting stuff and the constant conflict between us was foreplay.”

Sam, had a terrible past with vampires underestimating her, along with believing that she was a second-class citizen because she used to be a consort to her sire, she’s a Svente and she’s a woman.

Jared had never really had a relationship other than with his three (yes three) consorts. He was prejudice, and arrogant. He was exactly what Sam hated in this Vampire Society.

Understandably this caused misunderstanding between the two, along with fights. The banter between the two was so funny.

Jared’s lips were suddenly at my ear. “The only vampire who’ll be manhandling you tonight is me.”

“If I let you.”

“You get such satisfaction out of teasing me, don’t you?”

“I still maintain that you like it.”

Supernatural Elements

“Three breeds? Well you see, basically, you know how there are varying accounts of vampires? Some humans report us to be terribly aggressive with hulk-like strength, some report us to be entrancingly beautiful and charming, and others believe that we are actually more human-like than the stories say. Well the reason for all the confusion is that there are actually different breeds.”

Not completely original. Vampire Academy has the whole three breeds of Vampires, each with special gifts, but what I loved about these was that some of the powers where SOO original. For example
🦇 His gift was power augmentation, meaning that he could weaken or strengthen the gift of another.
🦇 Thorn-exhaling vampire
🦇 He was a Shredder: his gift allowed him to disband until he was nothing but molecules and then reform again at will.
🦇 one of them could become a slime
🦇 Another was a merger. they could merger forms

Conclusion

Hose me down with Holy water- this was a great read. I have found a great Vampire Romance, that has a Kick-Ass heroine and an Alpha Vampire, with an intriguing world- A Perfect Trio!!

Verity, is on the brink of losing her ancestral house. In debt because she left her fiancee at the altar, she’s selling house to repay.

Whilst selling everything she comes across an vase and scatters the dirt on her roses.

This action causes an ex-gangster Frankie the German to appear back from the dead.

He’s the great-great grand uncle of aforementioned fiancee, and he is going to help her keep her house.

Less than a year ago, my life had been so simple. I had a nice little freelance design business going. I was marrying a man I thought I loved. And then –poof. Ghosts in my kitchen and ramen for breakfast.”

Verity was a pure southern Belle and I absolutely adored her. Even though she was scorned by the ex, she didn’t have a bad word to say in public about him.

She was funny and super likeable, and smart. Everything I was happy reading. When she was in danger/pain she had real reactions. I loved her inner monologue.

The next morning I was up bright and early. Mostly because I’d sold the curtains.”

She also had a pet skunk!!

Ellis..well I hated his name. For some reason in my head I kept scoffing ‘ stupid name’

That’s the ONLY fault I had.

The storyline with hidden jewels, cash and murders did not get dull once, and it was an even pace the whole book.

“chill swept the room. I retreated until my back hit solid wood. I’d never seen a ghost or heard a ghost although I watched Ghost Adventures on television and I certainly believed in them and sweet Jesus I was trapped.”

This book isn’t very romance orientated, but I liked that all the focus was on a clever plot full of humor, action, ghosts and small town politics.

Great read.

I’m a part of the Netgalley readers community, and I was shocked by the lack of Vampire Novels. In my desperation I searched ‘Vampire’ and this was the ONLY book.

But it must have been kismet because this book was awesome.

It’s set in a slightly futuristic American, where there is a Vampire Royal Family.

The Prince, Dallas, is looking for a wife, and he wants a human wife one from one of the settlements. And so begins, a ‘The Bachelor’ type reality with Vampires, Rebels and an impending war.

I’ve heard this book called ‘The Selection’ with Vampires. I haven’t read The Selection, so I can’t really compare, but it was a great read.

Sensitivity training so they won’t insult the Vampires. Now I’ve heard of everything.

The Heroine

Gwen was a likable heroine. At first, she had a kind of Katniss complex, looking out for family etc.

“I no longer let myself want things. Wanting wasn’t something I could afford. It lead only to disappointment.”

She made friends quickly, and was quite sassy, and clearly wanted to help. I could see that the author was setting her up to be a ruler.

She was my friend, and she was kind. And she was certainly easier to get along with than me.”

The Hero

Very Byronic. He had a tortured, kind of way about him. He clearly had a lot of responsibility and was trying to change the problems within the kingdom.

The Vampire Myth

Fangs, impervious to bullets, drink only liquids (Blood & Wine) Northern Vampires can have children, Vampire can be made via bite.

Conclusion

Amazing, 5 star YA Vampire read. I believe it’s a Trilogy and I cannot wait to start The next in the series- The Gala

Southern Undead Ice Tea

It’s a hot Sunday afternoon, and I am lazying in the garden, an ice tea in hand, listening to Southern Spirits by Angie Fox.

For some reason, a lot of paranormal romance happens in the Deep South of America; Interview with a Vampire, TrueBlood, Kate Daniels, Immortals of New Orleans, Dark Hunter Series.. to name a few.

In honour of the south, I thought I would post my Southern Undead Tea Recipe.

Southern Undead Ice Tea

Ingredients

  • 3-5 Black Tea bags
  • 2 cups of Lemon Juice
  • 1 Cup of Sugar
  • Lemon Wedges for garnish
  • Hot Water

Method

Find a pitcher that can take cold & boiling temperatures. Add the sugar, and the tea bags.

Pour the boiling water into the jug, and stir repeatedly until the sugar has dissolved. Leave the tea for a further 3 minutes, (leave longer, the stronger the tea)

Remove the tea bags, and add the lemon juice. Stir. Add to the fridge.

When cooled enough, add wedges of Lemon, and Ice.

Nobody said love was perfect…

Roman Draganesti is charming, handsome, rich…he’s also a vampire. But this vampire just lost one of his fangs sinking his teeth into something he shouldn’t have. Now he has one night to find a dentist before his natural healing abilities close the wound, leaving him a lop-sided eater for all eternity.

Things aren’t going well for Shanna Whelan, either. After witnessing a gruesome murder, she’s next on the mob’s hit list. And her career as a dentist appears to be on a downward spiral, because she’s afraid of blood. When Roman rescues her from an assassination attempt, she wonders if she’s found the one man who can keep her alive. Though the attraction between them is immediate and hot, can Shanna conquer her fear of blood to fix Roman’s fang? And if she does, what will prevent Roman from using his fangs on her?

img_20180605_1852023845110418773737307.jpg

With a tagline like ‘It’s just as easy to fall in love with the undead’, I was super excited to start this novel. The title suggests an almost manual-like story, but alas. It does not tell me how to marry a Millionaire Vampire.

I’ve read a lot of vampire novels, in fact, I breathe them, so this is a great addition to my vast collection.

I love the cover, the wedding dress, with the door open, looking outward to a very blood red sky with a bat flying away is very cool to me. If only there was a desktop wallpaper…mmm. let’s settle for a picture of Eric from True Blood then…

Image result for eric true blood

The back cover states ‘ leaving him a lop-sided eater for all eternity’ this made me chuckle. Many authors have managed to create humorous vampire novels, like Mary Janice Davidson and Gerry Bartlett, so I was looking forward to this!!

“Roman might have survived the Great Vampire War of 1710, but he was about to face an even worse terror.
A mortal female in full rage.”

The Hero

Roman Draganesti (great name) is a tortured hero. Believing he is going straight to hell because he is an abomination. He is a part of some very forward thinking Vampires, who have helped create a robot that Vampires can drink from. However, upon trying said robot, he chips a tooth. He has an immediate attraction to Shanna, and although he’s reserved at first (see above abomination) he acts on his lust.

The Heroine

Shanna is quite a strong character, even in the face of the unknown, she doesn’t buckle. She doesn’t demand to be a Vampire, and she is very self-aware. Despite being kidnapped by a creature she did not know exist, she didn’t fall to pieces. She was not a damsel in distress, no matter however it seems she is portrayed by both the cover and he blurb. She did, however, have a fear of Blood, which was kind of ironic.

The Myth

In HTMAMV – Vampires are like corpses when it’s daylight. However, during the night they have a heartbeat.   There is also Vamp TV network, and once again, blood substitute.

“Gregori strutted toward the door. “I’m too sexy for my cape, too sexy for my fangs. Too sexy.” He whirled in a circle, then struck a disco pose with a hand pointing at the ceiling. “Too sexy!” He left with a flourish of his cape.”

I loved this first start to a new series, it was humorous and sexy, and a great premise for the rest of the series.

Here’s another Eric for us all:

New Post

Audiobooks: KOBO vs Audible

It’s a showdown, people!!!

I love audiobooks. last thing before bed for about 20 minutes I love to pop on some fairy lights, have a hot drink, lie back in bed, and be carried off to another world.

I always feel so relaxed and refreshed when I wake.

That being said, audiobooks, individually purchased are really EXPENSIVE. you are talking at least £10-£25 for each book. Not purse friendly.

BUT Audiobook subscriptions make it possible for me. There are two contenders for these Audible- an Amazon based company and KOBO – a Ratuken company.

IMG_0140

How do they work?

You buy a credit each month which can be exchanged for 1 audiobook, no matter the price individually. you can then play these via the app on all smartphones, laptop, and computers.

Subscription Price

Audible: £7.99, per month for 1 credits. £14.99 for 2 credits

Kobo: £6.99, per month for 1 title

Availability of titles

Honestly, it’s about the same. I search for titles that appear on Audible and Kobo and they were identical.

App

Kobo

The Kobo app contains eBooks & Audiobooks. The home page I felt was a little underwhelming, BUT the reading activity page made me a happy little reader. I love reading about stats, especially my own. With stats like ‘hours per book’ and ‘pages turned’ I was a happy little book bat.

There are also rewards like the social butterfly, witching hour (wow) and Deep thinker to be won. I do love challenges.

Overall 🦇🦇🦇🦇

screenshot_20180607-071216

Audible

When you open the audible app it takes you straight to where you left the app the last time you were there. In my instance, the Library. I like that for two reasons, 1) no-one is trying to sell you more books. 2) the bottom of it has the last played book player, so you can just continue where you left off.

There is also a stats page with reward badges which were quite similar to KOBO, it does give you a ranking depending on how long you listen to them.

Overall

Other Services

Audible:

  • Although the Audible app does not have the ebooks in the app, you can switch between the eBook and Audiobook, if you have purchased both. If you already own a Kindle book, chances are you will get an offer price on the Audiobook at a really reduced price. you can then switch between the apps, and continue on the eBook, or the audiobook when needed. it will keep your place.
  • Audible has a free service called ‘Shows’ which are like podcasts but by authors and famous people. (Stephen Fry’s one is very good. )
  • Finally, if you are a Harry Potter fan, you can only get the series on audible. although it links to JK Rowlings own Pottermore Website.

Verdict

You need to way up how serious you are about audiobooks. If you are starting out I would recommend KOBO, if you are not sure how much time you would have for it. It’s cheaper and easy to use.

If you think you want more credits at a better value for money, the hands down you’ll want Audible. Three extra credits can be purchased for £17.99 So if you feel you need the rest of a series you started listening to you can.

Audiobooks can be addicting. I have 457 Audible titles. (I’ve been with Audile for about 8 years)

REVIEW:

For me, this is the quintessential Vampire Romance. It has everything that a good vampire novel should have.

After the wake of such Vampire pop culture as Buffy and Twilight, vampires tend to have a soul. They fill pages and pages feeling guilty about what they’ve done and they brood! – A lot! Which is fine.. for a while. Then you get a book like this with a character like William and it changes things. When I read this it was shortly after I had read Twilight, and William was my introduction to a more naughtier Vampire. Okay, sure at some point William is not happy to condemn her soul.. yadda, yadda.. But I am glad to see that about 4 paragraphs into it; he don’t care!! To say the least, it was refreshing for me.

This book also kicked off for me my true love for Paranormal Romance, so for this I am eternally grateful (get it!!) This was also the first Cynthia Eden book that I read and have been hooked ever since.

This book had the right mix of romance and action and was very sweet, but hot at the same time, and I Loved it!!
I no longer fear the darkness.

I grinned so much during this book, my jaw hurt. I loved the friendships and the Christmassy feel, plus Rhysand!!

Not to brag, but I read it in one sitting…

“Dangerous words, Rhysand,” Amren warned, strutting through the door, nearly swallowed up by the enormous white fur coat she wore. Only her chin-length dark hair and solid silver eyes were visible above the collar. She looked— “You look like an angry snowball,” Cassian said.”

It was funny, Heart warming, and at one point I got a little choked up. This story to me what very much a ‘what happens after a war novel’

“To the blessed darkness from which we are born, and to which we return.”

With the release of A Court of Frost and Starlight within the next 24 hours, I thought I’d post my final thoughts on the previous book, ACOWAR.

I was super excited about this book. I even booked the day off work when it was released. With the cliffhanger from ACOMF, I wanted answers…

“A Shadow slammed into the eath before us, cracking the ice toward every horizon.
Not a shadow.
A Illyrian warrior. ”

From that point on I couldn’t stop smiling, and then when Rhysand came back on the page, I SQUEALED… Needless to say, the neighbourhood dogs started barking.

He leaned down, nuzzling my throat. “Don’t you want to comfort your mate, who has missed you terribly these weeks?”

In the previous books, War has been brewing between the King of Hybern, and the rest of Prythian. The Inner Circle are reunited, and it’s fabulous!! I love the way SJM has written the friendship; it is stunning.

Only you can decide what breaks you

Tamlin the tool is back, and earlier in the book, I felt nothing but anger to him, and by the end, I guess he made amends, a little.

The pace of the book was uneven but in a captivating way. the scenes of war were fast as expected, and the family comforting and almost warm.

“Night Triumphant- and the Stars Eternal.”

There was just no point in the book where it lulled for me. I never got bored, I never skipped pages, I just kept wanting more.

There are a few things I had wished that the SJM had answered, like relationships within the Inner Circle, her sister full gifts, and the outcome of other characters within the series, such as other High Lords.

I am sooooo pleased that there is a next book coming out, and maybe some answered.

In my opinion, these books are pure perfection, and SJM will have a fan for life…

Review:

WOW!!!

I was about a year late for the hype of this book. I read this book, the first time in January 2017, and it blew me away.

Firstly, the woman on the cover is wearing a very decorative feather outfit, and of course THAT tattoo (if you don’t know what I’m talking about -read it) IMHO, the cover is simple and tells you very little of the story until you have read it.

Prior to this, I hadn’t read any books with Faes in, and what the author calls Fae, I would think elves- like Lord of the Rings.

When you open the book, the first thing I notice is a Map of the magical realm called Prythian. It looks a little bit like The British Isles, with Hybern looking like Ireland. Prythian is broken up into courts, Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter, day and night courts, with a wall dividing them and the Mortal Realm.

The story begins with Feyre, a Human who kills a ‘Beast’ to ensure her family survive the winter. Her punishment lies on the other side of the Wall. She is brought to the Spring Court, by Tamlin- The High Lord.

Let me make this clear for you, girl: you can either come live at my home in Prythian- offer your life for the wolf’s in that way- or you can walk outside right now and be shredded to ribbons. Your choice. – Tamlin

Feyre is introduced to the cruel, but beautiful world of Prythain, with its strange dreamlike creatures, and curses. But can Beauty survive falling in love with the Beast?

“I love you,’ he whispered, and kissed my brow. ‘Thorns and all.”

“Because you don’t notice the light without a bit of shadow. Everything has both dark and light. You have to play with it till you get it exactly right.”

I was looking forward to this book, I have a great love of history and of paranormal, and this seemed like a great fit. I also thought that the title was so compelling.

I had never read anything by Libba Bray before but by a few sentences in I had already popped on Amazon and bought the sequels, A Sweet Far Thing & Rebel Angels.

The utterly gorgeous cover, the white corset, with the brown background just screams Victorian, so appeals to those who love Historical fiction.

“How I’d love to get away from here and be someone else for a while in a place where no one knows or expects certain things from me.”

Gemma Doyle is a strong, feminist character. Despite having a gift/curse, that she doesn’t understand, I found Gemma to be likeable. I also liked that her gift/curse was something believable if that makes sense.

There were quite a few chapter endings that had a shock, that keeps you reading and the friendships between the girls build so it has that feeling of a journey.

This book was great, and I haven’t finished the series yet. There are so many books getting in the way, but I am hoping to finish this year.

Bella Swan moves to Forks, Washington to live with her Father, Charlie. She attends the local high school, where she meets Edward Cullen.

Edward is unlike any teenage boys his age, he has ice cold hands, his eyes change colour, he talks like he’s from a different time, and he is super fast. Bella is intrigued by him, but he gives the impression he hates her, and she doesn’t understand why.

Until she finds out that he is a Vampire. As are his family.

“I like the night. Without the dark, we’d never see the stars.”

I read Twilight quite a few years ago, probably about 11 years ago, and it spurned what I call my second wave of book obsession… Previously when I was at school I read Night world, and Vampire Diaries, but they hadn’t fueled my obsession yet.

I was hooked, I consumed every book as soon as they came out, equally I loved the films so much.

_2ba74e94-45e9-11e7-815c-f4e1adc20f07

What I connected mostly was Bella’s awkwardness. She was socially inept. So was I. she preferred to read. So did I. I was 19 at the reading the first, and I was just happy that I could identify with a character who was a similar (at the time) age as me.

Edward- well, I loved him too. not so much in New Moon, but that’s for a different review!! Everyone pretty much knows the story now, of how the lion fell in love with the lamb, but as I get older I find myself wanting to re-read Twilight again.

Beauty knows the Beast’s forest in her bones—and in her blood. Though she grew up with the city’s highest aristocrats, far from her father’s old lodge, she knows that the forest holds secrets and that her father is the only hunter who’s ever come close to discovering them.

So when her father loses his fortune and moves Yeva and her sisters back to the outskirts of town, Yeva is secretly relieved. Out in the wilderness, there’s no pressure to make idle chatter with vapid baronesses…or to submit to marrying a wealthy gentleman. But Yeva’s father’s misfortune may have cost him his mind, and when he goes missing in the woods, Yeva sets her sights on one prey: the creature he’d been obsessively tracking just before his disappearance.

Deaf to her sisters’ protests, Yeva hunts this strange Beast back into his own territory—a cursed valley, a ruined castle, and a world of creatures that Yeva’s only heard about in fairy tales. A world that can bring her ruin or salvation. Who will survive: the Beauty, or the Beast?

Once again, this was a book that was hyped up on Bookstagram. The cover is beautiful and the chapter headings have this wonderful snow and forest theme. Throughout the book, when the beast’s monologue/letters are written with splashes of blood.

“She wept because she did not know what she wanted, and because she wanted everything.”

The beginning of the book was slow. REALLLY slow. I thought for sure at some point I would abandon the book. The ending did feel kind of rushed to get the story to a conclusion, but overall I really did enjoy the book.

It wasn’t a book I would have stayed awake all night reading, because it didn’t hold my interest enough. That being said, between the dedication and the below Quote, I did fall in love with the author a little. Her descriptions of the forest and of the beauty were incredible, and I loved the imagery her words brought up.

It did have a Historical Fiction sort of feel, as the magic in the story was very nondescript which I did enjoy immensely, but I wish there were a bit more actions in the story.

The ending was OK. I know there are a lot of negatives about the ending, and it’s not your typical HEA, but it was interesting and for me probably the best part.

“She moves like beauty, she whispers to us of wind and forest—and she tells us stories, such stories that we wake in the night, dreaming dreams of a life long past. she reminds us of what we used to be.

She reminds us of what we could be.”

Recommend for those who love Fairytale Retellings, and brutal heroines…

“if you’re reading this book, then you’re also that child reading by flashlight and dreaming of other worlds. Don’t be scared of her, that inner Beauty, or her dreams. Let her out. She’s you, and she’s me, and she’s magic.
